Summary: A look at how upcoming changes to the layout and functionality of the Facebook home page could affect brand advertisers
Facebook Re-Design 2009
A presentation deck from Facebook was recently leaked which introduces some new, exciting changes to the way that the Facebook home page is laid out. These changes, while mostly subtle, should help to make the experience on Facebook better for users, and at the same time, better for advertisers.
Here are some of the pending changes coming to your Facebook home page.
First, if you have a large number of friends, it may be difficult to keep up with what they are all doing. So, Facebook is rolling out two different views of the news feed which a user can select.
The Top News Feed
The “Top News” feed will show you a summary your friends activity for the day. This will function similarly to how “Highlights” current works.
The “Recent Activity” feed will show your friends activity in real-time.
Currently, there is only really a “Recent Activity” feed.
In addition, several new statuses will be displayed in both feeds.
- When your friends become fans of something
- Event RSVP
- Photo tagging
- Friend requests and accepts
- Relation changes
- Group memberships and group activities
The fan notifications should make it easier for brands to virally grow their Facebook Pages, which is a welcome change. Facebook will also now show 2 suggested pages to fan (or people you may know) instead of one.
